Methodology

Every figure on this site comes from NCUA’s 5300 Call Report quarterly data files, which NCUA publishes about two months after each quarter ends. We load five quarters at a time: the latest and the four before it, so that the oldest is the same quarter a year earlier.

How we calculate

  • 60+ days late is ACCT_041B divided by ACCT_025B.
  • Growth compares the latest quarter with the same quarter a year earlier.
  • Peer medians use NCUA’s own asset-size peer groups (the Peer_Group field), across every credit union in the group.
  • Totals on the home page count only federally insured credit unions (charter types 1 and 2). Our count for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 is 4,214, which matches NCUA’s published quarterly summary.

Names

NCUA files names without the legal suffix (“PENTAGON”). Federal charters must carry “Federal Credit Union” in their name, so we add it for federal charters, and “Credit Union” for state charters, unless the filed name already includes it. The filed name and any trade names the credit union reports appear on its page.

Mergers

The merger tracker reads the “Mergers” sheet of NCUA’s quarterly Merger Activity and Insurance Report. A credit union that stops filing but does not appear there is listed separately and not described as merged until a report says so.

What we do not publish

NCUA’s profile file includes a field-of-membership type code, but NCUA does not publish what each code means, so we do not translate it. Who can join is described from each credit union’s own eligibility page, and only on the anyone can join list.
