Credit union data API and MCP server

Every figure and ratio on this site is free as JSON, and AI assistants can query it directly through a Model Context Protocol server at https://creditunions.online/mcp. No key, no sign-up. The data covers all 4,299 credit unions that filed NCUA's Q2 2026 call report (quarter ended June 30, 2026).

Connect an AI assistant (MCP)

The server speaks MCP's Streamable HTTP transport at https://creditunions.online/mcp. It needs no login and only reads data. Once connected, ask in plain words; the assistant picks the tool, and every answer names the quarter and links the credit union's page here.

Claude

In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors, choose to add a custom connector, and paste https://creditunions.online/mcp as the URL.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http credit-union-ledger https://creditunions.online/mcp

Cursor, Windsurf and other clients

Add the server to the client's MCP configuration file (for Cursor, .cursor/mcp.json):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "credit-union-ledger": {
      "url": "https://creditunions.online/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Clients that only run local servers can bridge to it with a remote-MCP proxy such as npx mcp-remote https://creditunions.online/mcp.

Calling it without an assistant

Each request is one JSON-RPC 2.0 message posted to /mcp; the answer comes back as JSON. A plain GET returns a short description of the server.

curl -s https://creditunions.online/mcp \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -H 'Accept: application/json, text/event-stream' \
  -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/call",
       "params":{"name":"rank_credit_unions",
                 "arguments":{"metric":"rateNewAuto","state":"TX","limit":5}}}'

JSON API

Static files, rebuilt when NCUA posts a new quarter, served from Cloudflare's edge and open to any website (CORS allows every origin). Every record carries its quarter, its source and a link to its page here. Fetch the full file once rather than thousands of single records when you need everything.

EndpointWhat it returns
/api/v1/index.jsonDiscovery document: every endpoint, the data quarter and the MCP server.
/api/v1/credit-unions.jsonAll 4,299 credit unions with every metric below, in columns: fields[] names the columns and rows[] holds one array per credit union. About 2 MB.
/api/v1/credit-unions/{charter}.jsonOne credit union by NCUA charter number: profile, phone and hours, raw call-report figures with the NCUA account code behind each, every metric with national and peer-group percentiles and the peer median, rank in its state, five quarters and up to 40 offices.
/api/v1/states.jsonEvery state: count, combined assets, members, loans and deposits, delinquency, and medians of key ratios.
/api/v1/states/{st}.jsonOne state (two-letter code in lower case, such as tx) with every credit union headquartered there, largest first.
/api/v1/metrics.jsonEvery metric key with its definition, unit and which direction is better.
/api/v1/mergers.jsonNCUA-approved mergers from the last five Merger Activity and Insurance Reports.
/api/v1/trade-names.jsonCharter number to the trade names NCUA lists for it (SECU, BECU).
/openapi.jsonOpenAPI 3.1 description of all of the above.

Examples

One credit union (Navy Federal is charter 5536):

curl https://creditunions.online/api/v1/credit-unions/5536.json

Highest return on assets, from the full file, with jq:

curl -s https://creditunions.online/api/v1/credit-unions.json \
  | jq -r '.fields as $f | .rows[] | [.[($f|index("name"))], .[($f|index("roa"))]] | @tsv' \
  | sort -t$'\t' -k2 -nr | head

In JavaScript:

const res = await fetch('https://creditunions.online/api/v1/credit-unions.json');
const { fields, rows, quarter } = await res.json();
const col = (k) => fields.indexOf(k);
const texas = rows.filter((r) => r[col('state')] === 'TX');
console.log(quarter, texas.length, 'credit unions in Texas');

Charter numbers are NCUA's and never change, so they are the safe key to store. Find one with the MCP search tool, the site search, or the id column of the full file. Prefer spreadsheets? The same data is on the downloads page as CSV.

Metric reference

The key in each row is the field name in the API and the metric argument for the MCP tools. Year-to-date income, expense and charge-off figures are annualized; "average" balances are the mean of this quarter and the prior December, as in NCUA's Financial Performance Report. Percentiles run from 0 to 100, where 100 is best for a ratio with a direction.
