Credit union net worth ratio

Net worth divided by total assets. NCUA's rules treat 7% or more as well capitalized (12 CFR 702.102). The median across all 4,299 credit unions reporting it was 12.65% for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. Among those with $50.0 million or more in assets, the middle half ran from 9.91% to 13.85% (median 11.58%).

Under NCUA's prompt corrective action rules (12 CFR 702.102), a credit union is well capitalized at a net worth ratio of 7% or more, adequately capitalized at 6% to 7%, undercapitalized at 4% to 6%, significantly undercapitalized at 2% to 4%, and critically undercapitalized below 2%. Complex credit unions (over $500 million) also face risk-based capital rules.

Why it matters

The net worth ratio is the main capital measure regulators use for credit unions. It drives NCUA's prompt corrective action categories, so it is the first figure to check when asking whether a credit union is sound.
