Questions people ask
How long will it take to pay off my credit card?
It depends on the balance, the rate and the payment. At the 11.50% median rate credit unions reported for Q2 2026, a $5,000 balance with $164.88 a month is paid off in 36 months. A payment that only covers the monthly interest never pays it off.
Are these the rates I will be offered?
No. They are the rates credit unions entered for each loan type on their call reports to NCUA for the quarter. Your rate depends on your credit, the term, the collateral and the date, and you must be eligible to join the credit union. Use them as a benchmark, then check the credit union's own rate sheet.
How is the payment calculated?
With the standard amortization formula: payment = P x r / (1 - (1 + r)^-n), where P is the amount, r the annual rate divided by 12, and n the number of months. For the payoff time, months = -ln(1 - r x balance / payment) / ln(1 + r), which assumes no new charges.
